Virtual Modular Courses
The full Process Safety Excellence course covers three full days of in-person classroom training, or six, half-day virtual sessions. These virtual modular courses cover one chapter from the book. This training provides practical, implementation-oriented material designed for people who operate, maintain, inspect, test, support, and lead process facilities. Process safety specialists can also benefit by using this material to educate their workforce and provide rigorous implementation of process safety programs.
I personally teach all courses, drawing on more than four decades of engineering and process safety experience, most of it working directly for operating companies.
This training is not a wall of words on a hundred slides. I use adult learning principles and active participation with an extensive workbook where students walk away with actions to implement on their process unit.
Most process safety training approaches the subject from the perspective of the process safety specialist. This course approaches it from the responsibilities of the people who operate, maintain, inspect, test, support, and lead process facilities. The training respects the intelligence, technical knowledge, and experience these professionals bring to their work. Nothing is dumbed down. Participants develop a thorough, technically rigorous understanding of the subjects as they apply to their responsibilities, with the depth and emphasis matched to the decisions they face. Process safety and HSE specialists can also benefit by learning how to better support that practical implementation.
My book Process Safety Excellence: A Practical Reference for Operating Companies, covers 34 chapters within three connected areas:
Risk-Based Process Safety. How process safety management systems support safe operations, how responsibilities connect across an organization, and how to recognize gaps between written requirements and actual practice. All 20 elements are included.
Technical Safety Topics. How technical safeguards help control major hazards, what their effectiveness depends on, and what you need to understand about their use in your facility.
Process Safety Leadership. How decisions, priorities, accountability, and follow-through influence process safety and how to put those responsibilities into practice.
The course follows the structure of my book.
What’s included in the virtual courses
Pre-course survey. Allows me to understand the responsibilities and interests of each group of students. I will make minor adjustments to the content and delivery based on the survey.
Process safety foundations. Establishes the shared language of hazards, risk, consequences, and safeguards. This material is provided as self-study ahead of the class using materials to be received upon registration. This should require minimal effort since most course attendees will already have a basic understanding of process safety and risk management concepts.
Free hardcover copy of my book. Provided on day one of the training course.
Extensive workbook. Contains a summary of each chapter of the book, along with spaces for students to develop takeaways and action items for each chapter. The expectation is that, after covering a topic and completing discussions and questions on it, the students will develop personal action items to take away from the course back to their process unit for investigation or implementation.
One-hour virtual follow-up session. Scheduled a few weeks after the in-person training, this allows participants to bring back and discuss the progress of their follow-ups, takeaways, and implementations, and ask additional questions or for clarification.
Ongoing engagement. I provide my personal contact info where each student can call or email to ask any questions they may have after the course has been completed.
