Shift supervisors, area supervisors, operations supervisors, chief operators, unit supervisors, and the engineers and managers responsible for operating and maintaining hazardous process units. If you are accountable for what happens on shift, this book was written for you.

What's inside

Part I — Risk-Based Process Safety. The twenty RBPS elements organized under the four CCPS pillars: commit to process safety, understand hazards and risk, manage risk, and learn from experience. Each chapter follows a consistent format covering what the regulation requires, an incident example drawn from a CSB final investigation report, what to watch for on the unit, what the front-line leader can do, and the supporting cast each element depends on. OSHA PSM and EPA RMP requirements are integrated throughout the framework rather than treated as a separate compliance section.

Part II — Technical Safety. The technical topics front-line leaders are expected to manage but rarely receive practical guidance on: safe operating limits, independent protection layers, the unit process hazard analysis, gas detection systems, codes and RAGAGEP, safety instrumented systems, emergency block valves, pressure relief systems, and job safety analysis.

Part III — Process Safety Leadership. What good process safety leadership looks like, the signals leaders send under production pressure, human and organizational performance, and communicating risk.
